ABOUT US
Founded from lived experience
Weapons Down Wirral CIC was founded from lived experience of violence, addiction, poor mental health and crime. We understand the challenges faced by many people in our communities because we've lived them ourselves. That lived experience shapes everything we do and gives us a genuine understanding of the barriers many children, young people and adults face.
Our founder, Andrew Groom, grew up in one of Wirral's most disadvantaged communities where opportunities were limited and crime, addiction and violence were common. After becoming involved in crime, serving a prison sentence and experiencing addiction himself, Andrew rebuilt his life through recovery, boxing and the support of positive role models. That journey proved that lasting change is possible when people are given the right support, opportunities and someone who believes in them.
Today
Today, Weapons Down Wirral exists to reduce violence, improve mental health and support long-term recovery by addressing the root causes that place people at risk. Based at Argyle Community Fitness in Birkenhead, we provide a safe, welcoming community hub where children, young people and adults can access free boxing, fitness and wellbeing programmes, mentoring, education, volunteering opportunities and peer support.
Working together
We work alongside Youth Justice Services, Wirral Ways, Wirral Mind, schools, colleges, Merseyside Police, Wirral Council and local community partners to engage people who are often excluded from traditional services. Through early intervention, positive role models and trusted relationships, we help individuals build confidence, improve emotional wellbeing, develop healthy routines and make positive life choices.

Pathways to brighter futures
Alongside our wellbeing programmes, we create opportunities for people to progress through volunteering, accredited training and recognised qualifications. These pathways help participants develop practical skills, improve confidence, gain valuable experience and increase their employment and education opportunities, empowering them to become positive role models within their own communities.
We believe boxing is far more than a sport. Combined with physical activity, mentoring and lived experience, it becomes a powerful tool for improving mental health, strengthening resilience, supporting recovery and reducing violence.
Weapons Down Wirral is more than a community organisation—it's a place where people feel safe, supported and empowered to build healthier lives, stronger relationships and brighter futures.
